Traps & Triggers

Damage

Trap damage scales with player level and the base damage is either D3 or D6. Traps that use D3 as base damage can cause up to 10 points of damage (3D3 + 1) at level 20 and traps that use D6 as base damage can cause up to 21 points of damage (3D6 + 3) at level 20. Note that damage caused by traps cannot be resisted in most cases (magic trap is the only exception as long as its damage type isn't magic).

Trap Types

There are four types of traps, direct damage, snares, spawners and triggers. Direct damage traps and snares cause damage when you step on them and if you critically fail to rest or move out, snares hold you in place unless you manage to free yourself from the trap, spawners may spawn creatures and triggers trigger something. Most traps can be avoided by levitating above them

Bear Trap

    Base Damage: D3
    Trap Type: Snare

Spike Trap

    Base Damage: D6
    Trap Type: Damage

Spider Web

    Base Damage: None
    Trap Type: Spawner

Spider webs are a great place to hang out if you want to meet spiders. Unlike most other traps, spider webs can also snare creatures that fly or levitate.

Spiked Pit

    Base Damage: D6
    Trap Type: Snare

What do you get when you combine a bear trap and a spike trap? A stronger bear trap!

Water Pit

    Base Damage: None or D3
    Trap Type: Snare

Water pits don't do damage when you jump in but if you end up drowning in one it's your own fault.

Magic Trap

    Base Damage: D6 or Teleport
    Trap Type: Damage

Magic traps cause direct damage (fire, frost, shock, poison, disease, magic) or they can teleport you to a random location.

Crush Trigger

    Base Damage: None
    Trap Type: Trigger

Enjoy the instant death boulder. Pass a reflex check (using STR or AGI whichever is higher) or die.

Alarm Trigger

    Base Damage: None
    Trap Type: Trigger

Alerts everyone and their uncle about your presence. Usually this is a good thing and it helps to clear the level faster.

Gate Trigger

    Base Damage: None
    Trap Type: Trigger

If you thought that traps that may cause you to get stuck and force you to retire are lame and should never exist, you are mistaken.

Chasms & Bridges

Water Chasm

    Base Damage: None or D3
    Trap Type: Spawner

Water chasms have two exits, drowning and full body tentacle penetration. Lubrication and mold comes free of charge.

Lava Chasm

    Base Damage: Enough
    Trap Type: Scorchio

Base damage scales with level and lava causes 24 to 44 points of fire damage before resistances at level 20 when you move into lava and at the end of each turn *.

Bridge

    Base Damage: None
    Trap Type: None

These hardwood bridges can never break under your weight unless they're moldy or you're cursed. Safety guaranteed!

* Lava swimmers should prepare for the first turn double dip (entry and end of turn).
