Shields

Shields may be used to block one attack of any kind once per turn if the wielder is capable of blocking an attack. Shields do not block the attack automatically, but they do provide a penalty modifier that affects the attacker's to-hit roll which may result in the attack being missed. This 'block modifier' equals to the strength bonus modifier of the wielder and it normally ranges from +1 to +5, or in the attacker's case, from -1 to -5.

Some shields only provide a certain level of protection and no matter how strong the wielder is, the block modifier may be capped to a lower level than the wielder's block modifier is. Note, however, that all shields grant the wielder a minimum block modifier regardless of the strength of the wielder.

Wielding a shield severely hinders any form of spell casting and a spell caster wielding a shield must re-roll successful spell to-hit rolls.

When a shield succesfully blocks an attack, or an attack made with a shield critically fails, the shield itself can be damaged and has to take a durability check to see if it can shrug off the damage, or be damaged (or broken if it was already damaged). Shield durability check uses the following formula:

Shield durability check: 2D6 > 2 + Critical Failure Modifier
